Dry-Needling

Dry needling is a technique utilized to treat pain and dysfunction caused by a wide range of musculoskeletal problems quickly and effectively.

What is dry-needling?

Dry needling (DN) uses very thin needles without any medication (a dry needle) to achieve its effect. A very thin needle is placed into a muscle, creating a lesion of microinflammation. This inflammation is recognized by the brain and the healing response is facilitated. This healing response typically is an increase in blood flow to the muscle that is being needled, allowing it to relax, increase range of motion and decrease pain.

In contrast to acupuncture which uses an ancient meridian system for needle location, dry needling uses a western anatomical model to determine needle placement. DN utilizes the identical thin needles as acupuncture however, the philosophy on why a structure is being needled is completely different.

DN is not intended to replace other customary components of your treatment program; including other forms of manual therapy, therapeutic exercise, or modalities such as electrical stimulation (which in some cases may be combined with your needling treatment). Adding DN to current manual therapy has been shown to speed up your rate of recovery.
